New Items at Seven Mountains are Steps Toward Becoming "Greener"

As announced over the winter, Council Camping Chairman - Charlie Harklerode and Scout Executive Jim Kennedy announced an objective of making Seven Mountains Scout Camp more environmentally friendly in 2008.   It is hoped such measures will cut trash by one-half.

Pictured above are 2 of the steps implemented toward achieving that objective.  Four hundred -- 10" Melamine plates were purchased to cover most events held at Seven Mountains.  Previously the camp had used donated dinnerware of various sizes and during large events, Styrofoam or paper plates were used.  About 300 -- 13oz bowls were also located on site for use with cereal and soup.

Leaders attending Boy Scout Summer Camp and Webelos Resident Camp will receive a travel Mug for use with coffee and tea.  See Leaders Guide for details.

Additionally, working with Feesers Foodservice Distributors, bulk cereal and juice dispensers were secured to replace individual serving portions.  Squeeze containers for each table will replace the individual packets as well as containers for salad bar dressings.

In addition to working to protect our environment, it is hoped these and other programs will also control costs that continue to rise with the cost of production, grains and transportation to get the supplies to camp.

Look for more details to come.

Seven Mountains Scout Camp offers a unique blend of modern conveniences in a rustic setting.

Located midway between State College and Lewistown, just off US 322 on Seven Mountains, this 230-acre facility is adjacent to state land including Poe Valley State Park and the Mid State Trail.

Each summer more than 1,000 young Scouts converge on Seven Mountains for 7 weeks of summer camping. Each January, this number is equaled for our Annual Scout Klondike Derby.

This facility is available 7 days a week, 52 weeks a year to Scouting and non-Scouting groups. Churches, schools, non-profits, and business groups have used it for conferences, outdoor/environmental classrooms, retreats and more.

Seven Mountains Scout Camp Moves Toward Becoming "Green."

Council Camping Chairman Charlie Harklerode and Scout Executive Jim Kennedy have announced Seven Mountains Scout Camp will implement programs to become more environmentally friendly in 2008.

At recent meetings of Council and District leaders, it was announced that styrofoam would no longer be available for coffee, plates and bowls.  Leaders at Boy Scout and Webelos Resident Camps would receive travel mugs and regular glassware would be used as much as possible.  Other items such as individual ketchup, mustard, mayonnaise, sugar and sweetners would no longer be used, rather "bulk" containers would be purchased and put in smaller containers.  The camp, which has over ,1,000 campers each season, would also be announcing more recycling plans as the summer camping season draws closer.  The "green" movement will also extend into off season rentals beginning in the fall.

As noted in the meetings, We currently recycle cardboard, cans and plastics, but it was time that the camp "practiced what it preached" as an organization that promotes environmental awareness.  It was also noted the amount of money that is used for trash hauling, that could be reallocated into programming for the Scouts.

The Council Service Center will also begin more recycling -- particularly of copy paper and envelopes from mail.  The Center currently also recycles all cardboard and metal/aluminum products.
